The class trip they will talk about for years

A guided bike tour is how locals see Amsterdam, and it is often the highlight of a school visit. We run school bike tours in Amsterdam for schools, universities and youth travel operators from across Europe: students aged 8 and up, in groups from 10, with guides trained to work with young people and a route that fits your curriculum.

Choose a guided school tour, or let us run the whole day. From 2027 we offer five complete school days with the museums, workshops, cruise and lunch already built in, and our guide keeping to the timings so your teachers can enjoy the day too.

Safety and supervision on every school tour

    • Helmets for every student as standard
    • High-quality bikes in a wide range of sizes, checked before every departure
    • Guides trained for school groups, first aid trained, with a first aid kit on every tour
    • One guide per 15 riders, larger groups split into sub-groups with extra guides
    • Safety briefing and a short test ride before departure
    • Calm routes chosen for groups, a relaxed pace and regular stops
    • Risk assessment and safety documents for trip leaders on request
    • A walking version alongside for students who prefer to walk

Complete school days, new for 2027

Prefer us to run the whole day? From 2027 we offer five complete school days with the museums, workshops, canal cruise and lunch already built in, from a countryside cheese and clog day to an immersive and modern art day.

Entries, workshops, lunch, guide and bikes are included, days run Monday to Friday, and every venue can be swapped: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, NEMO, Dutch Resistance Museum, Rembrandthuis, Maritime Museum, STRAAT, a working windmill, a stroopwafel workshop and more.

    Bike rental for school groups

From €8.25 per bike, including VAT. City bikes and electric bikes, by the hour, the day or longer. Group rates apply from 10 bikes on one booking. Collect from any of our five shops in central Amsterdam, or we deliver to your hotel, hostel or venue.

Every rental includes two locks, a bell and lights on each bike, helmets for adults and children free of charge, bikes sized to the rider in advance when you send us heights, and roadside support with a replacement bike if one fails.

Our shops are open every day of the year. Tell us your dates and how many bikes you need and we will send a quote.

    What students learn

    History and culture

The Golden Age canal belt, the Jordaan, Anne Frank and the Second World War, and how the Dutch live today.

    Sustainability and cities

Cycling infrastructure, water management below sea level, circular housing and the car-free city.

    Art and creativity

Street art at NDSM and a graffiti session where every student paints.

    The Dutch landscape

Polders, dikes, windmills and a working farm, a short ride from the city.

    Meeting points

Every school tour and school day starts and ends at A-Bike Vondelpark, Tesselschadestraat 1E, so there is one meeting point to remember. Central meeting points, including near the RAI Convention Centre, or bikes delivered to your hostel or hotel, on request.

School bike tours Amsterdam: questions from teachers

Yes. Every student must be able to ride and control a bike safely on their own. Our guide runs a short check before departure, and any student who cannot ride safely will not be able to take part, so please tell us in advance if that applies to anyone in your group and we will arrange an alternative.

From 10 students upwards, with no real maximum. Larger groups ride in sub-groups of 15, each with its own guide, following the same route and starting at the same time, so the class stays together as one trip. One guide per 15 riders is a City of Amsterdam rule rather than a preference of ours, so it applies to every operator in the city.

One teacher goes free for every 14 students. Additional teachers and accompanying adults pay the student rate.

Yes. Helmets are provided as standard for every student on a school tour, at no extra cost.

The tour goes ahead. Amsterdam is a cycling city in all weather, we provide rain ponchos, and the guide adjusts the pace and the stops. We only cancel for weather if the Dutch national weather service, the KNMI, issues a code red warning for the region. If we cancel, you move to another date or receive a full refund.

We carry a wide range of frame sizes and adjust every saddle at the start. Send us the heights of your students when you book and we will have the right bikes ready before you arrive, which saves a good deal of time on the day.

Yes. We provide risk assessment and safety documentation for trip leaders on request, and we regularly complete the safety paperwork that UK and European school travel organisers require. Ask when you enquire and we will send it with your quote.

Yes. We regularly shape routes around history, the Second World War, sustainability and water management, art and design, and urban geography. Tell us the subject and the year group and we will build the route and the guide briefing around it.

At A-Bike Vondelpark, Tesselschadestraat 1E, 1054 ET Amsterdam, a few minutes from the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein. Every school tour and school day starts and ends there, so there is one address for your group to remember. Central meeting points and bike delivery to your hotel or hostel are available on request.

English on every tour. German, Dutch, French and Spanish are available on request, so please tell us which language your group needs when you enquire rather than on the day.

How far in advance should we book a school bike tour?

As early as you can. School groups book up to a year ahead for spring and early summer, which are the busiest months in Amsterdam. We do take shorter-notice bookings when guides and bikes are free, so it is always worth asking.

How do we pay, and can you invoice the school?

We invoice the school or the tour operator directly, and we are used to working around school funding timetables and holiday periods. Tell us who the invoice should go to and any deadline you need to meet.

What if one of our students cannot ride a bike?

Tell us in advance. Everyone on a tour must be able to control their own bike safely, so a student who cannot ride is not able to take part in the cycling itself. We can arrange a walking alternative alongside the group so nobody is left behind.

What happens if a student gets separated from the group?

Every group gets our customer care number before departure. A student or teacher who loses the group calls that number, and our team contacts the guide directly and coordinates getting everyone back together. Guides stay with the main group rather than leaving it to search.

Can we combine a bike tour with museums, a workshop or a canal cruise?

Yes, and that is what our complete school days are built for. We book the venues for you and the guide keeps the day to time. Museums, workshops, a canal cruise and lunch can all be built into the day.

Can you run the whole school day, not just the tour?

Yes. Our school day programmes combine a guided bike tour with museums, workshops and lunch, with our guide running the timings so your teachers can enjoy the day rather than manage it.

Who operates the canal cruises and transfers on a school day?

We operate the cycling ourselves. Canal cruises are run by a licensed and fully insured third-party cruise operator, and any coach or taxi transfer is provided by a licensed transport company whose documentation we check. A-Bike operates no boats or coaches of its own.

Can we change the number of students after booking?

Yes. Student numbers can be adjusted free of charge up to 48 hours before the day, which covers the usual last-minute illnesses and dropouts.

Are your guides qualified, and are they checked?

Our guides are licensed, work regularly with school groups, and are experienced in managing young riders in city traffic. A-Bike holds the licences required to operate tours in Amsterdam.

    How are the bikes maintained?

Bikes are checked daily and serviced on a regular maintenance schedule, and the fleet is continuously renewed. Every bike going out with a school group is checked before departure.

How long are the tours, and how far do students cycle?

City tours run 2 to 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace with regular stops. Countryside and e-bike tours run from 3.5 to 5.5 hours and cover more ground. Tell us your year group and we will recommend the right length.

Do countryside tours involve any public transport?

Yes. Countryside routes north of the city cross the IJ on the public GVB passenger ferry from behind Central Station. It is a short, free crossing and the guide takes the whole group across together.

Can you deliver bikes to our hotel or hostel?

On request, yes. Bike delivery to a hotel or hostel, and central meeting points such as near the RAI Convention Centre, can be arranged. Ask when you enquire so we can price it with your quote.

Do you take university and college groups as well as schools?

Yes. We work with universities, colleges and youth travel operators as well as secondary schools, and the sustainability, art and urban geography routes are popular with higher education groups.

Who do we contact on the day of the tour?

You get our customer care number with your booking confirmation. That line is staffed while tours are running and reaches the team who can contact your guide directly, which is faster than calling a shop.

Can we hire bikes for the group without a guided tour?

Yes. Group rental starts at 10 bikes on one booking, from €8.25 per bike including VAT, collected from any of our five shops or delivered to your hotel, hostel or venue. Locks, lights and helmets are included, and we size the bikes in advance if you send us the students’ heights.

Is the 1.5-hour City Highlights tour available to schools?

Yes, on request. It is not on our standard school rate card, so tell us in your enquiry that you want the 1.5-hour tour and we will quote it for your group.

How do we get a quote for a school group?

Send us your travel dates, the number of students and their ages using the enquiry form on this page, or email [email protected]. We reply by email with availability, a price per student and the options that suit your group.
